Description
This natural area is a historical nesting site for many varieties of birds, including white egrets, snowy egrets, cormorants, anhingas, and great blue herons. It's a small area, with an island, seen here, in a small lake. The entire thing is very close to the always busy Highway 41 that runs down the southwest coast of the state. The area is preserved and protected by the local chapter of the Audubon Society, and it is a natural jewel of a bird sanctuary. At the time this photograph was captured, it was not at the height of the breeding season. That takes place in January and February, generally, and this was in May. At the height of the season, one wonders how in the world all the birds can possibly find room, but even at this time, later in the season, many are in residence.
