Description
This high contrast black and white image shows a common moorhen in shallow water searching for tidbits to eat. Below, the bird's crisp black reflection is shown as well, as is the suggestion of ripples created by the bird and extending outward.
The common moorhen (Gallinula chloropus), also called a marsh hen, breeds in lakes and ponds, wherever there is dense vegetation along the shoreline. The dark feathered birds, often seen in pairs, have a yellow tipped bill and bright red frontal shield. They can be quite noisy. The birds are omnivores and seeds and small bits of plant material but also small fish, tadpoles, insects, worms, etc. Moor hen pairs are monogamous.
